As the importance and effect of trade marks have become appreciated more widely, many celebrities have made a bid to protect their more original offspring’s names with a registered trade mark.

Victoria Beckham and her bid for her daughter Harper’s name to be protected has been in the news of late in the UK but it seems there has been a similar battle simmering across the pond for some time.

Beyoncé and Jay Z of music stardom, previously tried to register ‘Blue Ivy’ in 2012 in an effort to prevent others benefitting from their daughter’s name.

This attempt was blocked by a company, named Blue Ivy.

The Blue Ivy company are an events company who have been using the name ‘Blue Ivy’ years before the music pair’s daughter was born. They are blocking the application as they believe that the pair will use the name to produce and sell merchandise, which may conflict with their events business.

In a bid to rid the application of the events business opposition, a new application for ‘Blue Ivy Carter’ was filed recently, however the Blue Ivy Company again have blocked the application for the same reasons.

There has been no official verdict on the new application but with the legitimate opposition from Blue Ivy Company, Beyoncé and Jay Z may have to accept their fate.
