McGregor in losing fight over trade mark applications

Conor McGregor may be a successful Mixed Martial Arts fighter but he is not on a winning streak with a number of trade mark applications.

McGregor has filed a number of applications across Europe and the US in a bid to gain control over a number of different words and phrases.

The issues started at the beginning of 2017, where the fighter filed to protect ‘Conor McGregor’ and ‘The Notorious’ in January.

The ‘Conor McGregor’ mark has been opposed by Dutch fashion company ‘Doniger’ who hold the trade mark ‘McGregor’ for clothing and accessories.

‘The Notorious’ mark has also fallen on its face as it has been opposed by the owner of EU trade mark ‘Notorious Fighter’.

His luck did not change as the year went on as his July 2017 filing for ‘I am Boxing’ was opposed by Swiss retailer Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund which sells ‘I Am’ branded clothing and cosmetics.

An August application for ‘ChampChamp’ in the EU saw two oppositions being filed. The first was filed by US company Cleats who produce the Champ brand of sports footwear studs. The second was filed by Champion Products, who are a global sportwear company.

This bad luck has trickled over to the new year as January saw yet another application block.

This time the mark in question was ‘Mystic Mac’. This was opposed by make up giant MAC cosmetics which is owned by Estee Lauder. As McGregor’s application also included cosmetics, it is fair to say McGregor may also be tasting defeat once more.
