The UK Intellectual Property Office- who are they and what do I need to know?
When dealing with trade marks or any type of intellectual property, you will inevitably come into contact with the UK Intellectual Property Office.
They are your one stop shop for any IP matters whether it is a dispute or just the humble beginnings of protection.
In regards to trade marks, the UK IPO are involved throughout the whole process.
You will need to submit your application to them if you are looking to register your trade mark and they are the ones to decide if you can secure protection.
Even after you have registered your mark, the UK IPO are still heavily involved. They require that they are kept informed in relation to any changes that you make in relation to your trade mark. Therefore, for example, if you are looking to sell your mark or license it out to someone, they require notification.
You will also have to renew your mark with them every 10 years.
In addition, they are a good source of information. Not only being a good place to contact if you have any queries, through their website https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/intellectual-property-office you can get access to a complete list of all registered trade marks, both in the UK and the EU.
