A New Look Trademark for the EU. OHIM now to be called EUIPO

As of today March 23, the terms Community Trademark (CTM) or Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) will no longer be in use. From now it will be called a European Union Trademark (EUTM) and the European trademark authority will be called: European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Here at the Trademarkroom we feel this is a positive change- who liked the name OHIM anyway and those new to trademarks never knew what it meant!

Trademark Classes.

Another important change is in regards to trademark classes. Previously class headings were deemed sufficient to protect all goods and services in that class. This is no longer the case. When drafting a trademark application it’s important to be specific about the nature of the protection you wish to claim. There's scope for trademarks registered before 2012 to change this and we will contact clients on an individual basis.

Trademark Fees

The cost of one application has been reduced to 850 Euro. However two classes will now be 900 Euro and then 150 Euro for each extra class.
