Can I make my trade mark a domain name?

In a world that is focused on technology, it is important to ensure your business can be accessed online.

To do this, you will need a domain name for your website.

It is important to create a united brand so your customers can identify you clearly from other competitors.

It therefore may be a good idea to match your domain name to your registered trade mark.

However, there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to register a domain name just because you have a trade mark for it.

To register a domain name, you must ensure that you go through an accredited registrar. This is extremely important as there are people who pose as legitimate domain registrars when actually they are there to scam you.

There are arguments both ways for the question as to whether you register your trade mark or domain first in a bid to make sure they match.

In reality, there is no sure fire way of doing it.

The Trademarkroom suggests that a search for your potential brand name needs to be done for both before any applications are made to ensure that the name is free to use in both mediums.

If it is free to use, make your applications for both at the same time. A trade mark application may take longer and be a bit more complex than to register a domain but it is important to first do your checks before rushing into applications.
