Historic Hoppings Funfair registers its name as a trademark.

As Europe’s largest funfair makes its 133rd return visit to Newcastle, the name has been registered as a trademark by Newcastle City Council and the Freemen of the City of Newcastle to protect and promote the brand. The trademark was registered in classes 41 (entertainment) and 43 (food and drink services) and can be viewed here: https://www.ipo.gov.uk/tmcase/Results/1/UK00003076357

The fair began as a two day Temperance Festival in 1882 and its name has origins in a Middle English word meaning “to dance’ which was an activity popular to old fairs of this time.

After a few years of fall outs, bad weather and cancellations it’s now back bigger then ever and the organisers say: ‘its new trademark status will ensure sustainability and allow the brand to go forward as a secured and protected event name.’

David Wilson, vice chairman of the Stewards Committee, said: “The Freemen and the City Council as lessors were aware that there were potential others not connected with the organising of the event who could register the name as a formal trademark, which would be totally inappropriate and could compromise our use of the name. We felt that in building and sustaining the event in the years ahead, we had to step in to secure the long term future of the name.’

Registering the name of the Trademark will prevent others from using the name and passing it off as their own. They now own a monopoly over the name The Hoppings.
