Making Money Moves? Cardi B Applies to Trademark ‘Okurrr’
Bronx rapper Cardi B has filed a trademark application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office to trademark her famous ‘Okurrr’ catchphrase.
The trademark application filed by her Company ‘Washpoppin’ earlier this month will cover “paper goods, namely, paper cups and posters and merchandise such as hoodies, T-shirts, sweatshirts, dresses and headgear”.
The filed paper work clarifies that the ‘Okurrr’ trademark is to contain three R’s however, Washpoppin has also filed paper work to trademark the alternative spelling using two R’s as a precaution to tackle any replica merchandise.
Last year, the 26 year old rapper described her catchphrase to talk host Jimmy Fallon as sounding like “a cold pigeon in New York City” and used the word in the Pepsi Super Bowl advert.
The money moves rapper is not the first star who has attempted to trademark catchphrases and names. Rapper 50 Cent trademarked his stage name and successfully sued Taco Bell in 2008 for their ‘infringing commercials’.
In 2012, Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte trademarked his popular catchphrase ‘Jeah!’
In 2015, Taylor Swift filed to trademark phrases including ‘this sick beat’ and ‘we never go out of style’ from her hit album 1989.
